Chintapalle
Chintapalle, located in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh, is a village historically significant as the starting point of the Rampa Rebellion (1922-1924) against British colonial rule. This rebellion was led by the revolutionary Alluri Sitarama Raju, who mobilized tribal communities to resist oppressive British policies such as the 1882 Madras Forest Act, which restricted their traditional agricultural practices and movement in forests.
On August 22, 1922, Raju and a group of about 500 tribal fighters attacked the Chintapalle police station, seizing arms and freeing political prisoners, marking the eruption of the rebellion. The village and surrounding forests were key areas of guerilla warfare and resistance during this struggle, with Raju ultimately being captured and executed in the Chintapalle forest in 1924.
Chintapalle remains a symbol of tribal resistance and the fight for justice, closely associated with Raju’s legacy as a charismatic leader and folk hero known as the "Manyam Veerudu" (Hero of the Jungle).
