Colonel Bailey's Dungeon, also known as Baillie's Dungeon, is a historical site located in Srirangapatna, near Mysuru, Karnataka. This underground prison was used by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Mysore Kingdom, to imprison British officers captured during the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
Colonel William Bailey, who was captured during the Second Anglo-Mysore War at the Battle of Pollilur in 1780, spent several months in the dungeon and tragically died there in 1782 due to the harsh conditions.
The dungeon is situated in the northern part of Srirangapatna, near the burial memorial of Tipu Sultan and surrounded by gardens on all four sides. It is a white-walled underground prison where prisoners were tied to fixtures in the stone slab and immersed in water up to their necks.
The site is a somber reminder of the brutal treatment of prisoners during that period and holds historical significance as part of the larger narrative of the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
