Cranganore Fort
Cranganore Fort, also known as Kodungallur Fort or Kottapuram Fort, is a historic stone fort located in Kodungallur, Thrissur district, Kerala. It was built by the Portuguese in 1523 under the supervision of Pedro Álvares Cabral and was originally named Fortaleza da São Tomé after Thomas the Apostle.
The fort was strategically positioned at the entrance of the Periyar River near the Arabian Sea, allowing control over maritime trade and naval activities. It was enlarged in 1565 but was captured and largely destroyed by the Dutch in 1662 following a prolonged siege aided by local betrayal.
The fort saw further involvement during the period of Tipu Sultan and was later fortified by the kingdom of Travancore to defend against Mysore’s invasions. Excavations under the Muziris Heritage Project have revealed thick laterite walls, bastions, powder magazines, and various artifacts reflecting its strategic and commercial significance. Today, the fort stands as a protected archaeological site exhibiting layers of colonial and regional history.
