Currency Building - Ghare Baire
The Currency Building, also known as Ghare Baire, is a historic building located in B.B.D. Bagh (formerly Dalhousie Square) in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was originally built in 1833 to house the Calcutta branch of the Agra Bank. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including being the first central office of the Reserve Bank of India from 1935 to 1937.
The building is an excellent example of Italianate architecture, featuring Venetian windows, brick arches, wrought iron gates, and marble and sandstone floors. It has undergone several restoration efforts to preserve its architectural integrity and historical significance.
Today, the Currency Building houses the Ghare Baire museum-exhibition, which showcases over 200 years of art from Bengal. The exhibition features works by renowned artists such as Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, and Jamini Roy. The museum is open to the public and offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Bengal.
