Daksheshwar Mahadev
The Daksheswar Mahadev Temple, also known as Daksha Mahadev Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the town of Kankhal, about 4 kilometers from Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The temple is named after King Daksha Prajapati, the father of Sati, Shiva's first wife.
The temple has a rich history and is associated with the legend of Sati, who self-immolated in the yajna kunda (sacrificial fire pit) during a ritual organized by her father Daksha, as he did not invite Shiva. Enraged by Sati's death, Shiva sent his Ganas (followers) to destroy the ritual, leading to the beheading of Daksha, who was later given the head of a goat at the behest of Brahma and other gods.
The present temple was built by Queen Dhankaur in 1810 and was later rebuilt in 1962. It is a significant pilgrimage site for Shaivaite devotees, especially during Maha Shivaratri and Navratri festivals. The temple complex also includes the Das Mahavidya temple, dedicated to the Mahavidyas, and a temple dedicated to Ganga.
