Dakshina Chitra Museum
Dakshina Chitra, meaning a picture of the south, is a living-history museum dedicated to South Indian heritage and culture. Located about 25 kilometers south of Chennai on the East Coast Road in Muttukadu, it was opened to the public on December 14, 1996. The museum was founded and is managed by the Madras Craft Foundation, established by Dr. Deborah Thiagarajan, an art historian of American origin.
The museum is built on 10 acres of land and showcases the life patterns of South Indians through various displays of art, folk performing arts, craft, and architecture. It features 18 authentic historical houses from different South Indian states, each with contextual exhibitions. These houses were purchased, dismantled, transported, and reconstructed by artisans from the regions they originated from.
