Dategad
Dategad Fort, also known as Sundargad, is a small hill fort situated about 75 kilometers south of Satara, Maharashtra, near the town of Patan. It stands approximately 2,000 feet above sea level and sits on a high tableland with steep escarpments, covering an area of around 3 acres.
The fort has historical significance as it was initially under Muslim control before coming under Maratha rule, notably associated with the Patankar family who were Deshmukhs in charge during the Maratha period. It was taken over by the British in May 1818. The fort features a notable rock-cut well about 100 feet deep with 64 steps and two large water tanks.
There are also statues of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganapati, a Shivalinga carved in laterite stone, and ruins of old buildings including a kacheri (court-house). The fort's architecture includes a gateway, rock-cut steps, and walls originally built with large laterite blocks without mortar. It is a moderately challenging trek of about 45 minutes from the base village Tolewadi, making it a popular day trip for visitors interested in history and nature.
The fort is mostly in ruins but remains a significant cultural and historical landmark in the region.
