Dharamshala

Dharamshala, located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, is a scenic town set against the backdrop of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 1,457 meters. It serves as the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh and is the administrative headquarters of Kangra district.

The town is divided into two parts: Lower Dharamshala, the commercial center bustling with markets and business, and Upper Dharamshala, also known as McLeod Ganj, which is famous as the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama and the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1960.

Dharamshala was originally a British hill station and military cantonment before becoming a major spiritual and tourist center hosting many Tibetan monasteries, temples, and cultural institutions. It is known for its natural beauty, peaceful environment, and vibrant Tibetan culture, attracting visitors for trekking, sightseeing, and spiritual retreats.

The economy largely depends on agriculture and tourism, with the town playing a vital role in Tibetan exile community life and regional administration.
