Dhinodhar Hills, located near Nani Aral village in Kutch, Gujarat, is a fascinating geological and spiritual site. The hill is a volcanic plug, rising to an elevation of 386 meters, and is composed of fine-grained, dark grey rock with distinct columnar jointing.
It is not an active volcanic vent but rather the eroded remains of a subvolcanic intrusion from the time of the Deccan Traps. At the highest peak of Dhinodhar Hill stands a small shrine dedicated to Dhoramnath, a revered ascetic who is said to have performed penance here for twelve years.
According to legend, his intense meditation caused the sea to dry up, leading to the formation of the Rann of Kutch. The shrine contains a red-smeared triangular stone believed to have supported his head during his penance. Nearby, the original ascetic’s fire, known as "dhuni," is lit annually during Bhadrapad when the monastery’s head priest visits to perform rituals.
