Eden Gardens (Cricket)

Eden Gardens in Kolkata, West Bengal, is the oldest cricket stadium in India, established in 1864, and one of the largest cricket stadiums globally, with a seating capacity of around 66,000 to 68,000 spectators. It is known as the "Mecca of Indian cricket" and is famous for its passionate and vocal crowds, often called cricket's answer to the Colosseum.

The stadium is situated in the heart of Kolkata near the Hooghly River and is operated by the Cricket Association of Bengal. Eden Gardens has hosted many historic matches, including the first Test match in 1934, the first One Day International in 1987, and the first T20 international in 2011. It has been a venue for major international tournaments like the World Cup and the ICC World Twenty20.

The ground is known for a pitch that offers something for all players—initial assistance to fast bowlers and later support for batsmen and spinners. In addition to cricket, the stadium has witnessed intense moments, including crowd riots during the 1996 World Cup semi-final. Eden Gardens also serves as the home ground for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and remains a revered symbol of cricketing history and culture in India.

The stadium has undergone renovations, including those before the 2011 World Cup, and features multiple stands and entrances to accommodate its large audience. Its name comes from the nearby Eden Gardens park, itself named after the Eden sisters of Lord Auckland, a Governor-General of India during British rule.
