Fatehabad Fort

Fatehabad Fort in Fatehabad, Haryana, was built in the 14th century by the Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who named the town Fatehabad after his newborn son, Fateh Khan. The fort was constructed on a mound to protect it from floods, wild animals, and invaders, featuring thick walls and a large lake on its northwest side for added defense.

Its design suggests it was a strong, impregnable structure, and it is believed that secret tunnels once existed, allowing the royal family to escape during emergencies, though these tunnels are now lost. Part of the fort area now serves as police lines, and remnants of the fort wall still exist in the old town. Within the fort precinct is an Idgah with a lofty pillar made from a mix of sandstone, marble, and iron, bearing inscriptions from the Quran and historical references to the Tughlaq dynasty.

The fort’s architecture shows a blend of Hindu and Islamic influences, reflecting the region’s layered history. Nearby, the tomb of Meershah Peer, a spiritual guide of Firoz Shah, and the Humayun Mosque, built during Mughal times, add to the site’s cultural significance. Fatehabad Fort stands as a testament to medieval architectural skill, strategic military design, and the rich heritage of the area.
