Fort Anjediva
Fort Anjediva is a historic Portuguese fort located on Anjadip Island off the coast of Karwar in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, though administratively it falls under Goa. It was built in 1505 by Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida as part of a strategic plan to control the sea route to India and serve as a safe harbor for ships during the monsoon. The island's natural springs provided fresh water, making it an important stopover for seafaring vessels from various regions.
Construction materials were sourced locally, including stones from an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Aryadurga that was demolished for this purpose. The fort originally included military defenses, a seminary, a Jesuit college, and a Portuguese school. After a period of abandonment, it was refurbished in 1682 and inhabited by several hundred people until it was abandoned again in the mid-19th century when military threats diminished.
The fort and island served as a refuge during invasions by regional powers like Tipu Sultan. In modern times, the island is part of India's territory since 1961 after Operation Vijay ended Portuguese rule in the region. Currently, the island is controlled by the Indian Navy as part of the Kadamba Naval Base and is not open to the public. The fort remains as ruins with two historic churches, reflecting its colonial past and maritime importance.
