Fort William is a historic fort located in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, not Howrah. It was originally built by the British East India Company between 1696 and 1702 and named after King William III. The fort played a significant role in British colonial history and is now the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
The fort is situated on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River and covers an area of 70 hectares. It has an octagonal shape with six gates: Chowringhee, Plassey, Calcutta, WaterGate, St Georges, and the Treasury Gate. The fort also houses St. Peter's Church, which was added to the complex in 1928.
