Gandikota Fort
Gandikota Fort, located in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, is an ancient fort overlooking the Pennar River gorge, often called the "Grand Canyon of India" due to the deep gorge created by the river cutting through the surrounding hills. The fort's name comes from the Telugu words "Gandi" meaning gorge and "Kota" meaning fort.
Originally built as a sand fort in 1123 by Kakaraju, a subordinate of the Kakatiya rulers, it was later expanded and fortified by the Vijayanagara Empire and ruled by the Pemmasani Nayakas. Gandikota Fort features imposing granite walls, a large entrance gate, and numerous bastions for defense. Inside the fort, there are historic structures such as temples dedicated to Ranganatha and Madhava, the massive Juma Masjid, a granary used during sieges, a pigeon tower, and a palace with decorated plaster walls.
The fort offers spectacular views of the surrounding forests and the Penna River, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark with a rich architectural heritage influenced by various dynasties over centuries. It is situated about 77 km from Kadapa and 15 km from Jammalamadugu and attracts visitors with its natural beauty and historical significance.
