Gangabal Lake, also known as Haramukh Ganga, is a pristine high-altitude alpine lake situated at the foothills of Mount Harmukh in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake is positioned at approximately 3,570 meters above sea level and is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and scenic beauty, surrounded by lush green meadows and towering mountains.

The lake stretches about 2.5km in length and 1km in width, making it one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the Kashmir Valley. Gangabal is primarily fed by glacial melt, precipitation, and underground springs, and its outflow joins the nearby Nundkol Lake before draining into the Sind River, traditionally considered the river’s source.

Gangabal Lake holds deep religious significance for Hindus, who consider it as sacred as the River Ganga. The lake is often seen as an abode of Lord Shiva, and it is a common practice for Kashmiri Hindus to immerse the ashes of their deceased relatives here, especially during the annual Harmukh-Gangabal Yatra pilgrimage. The pilgrimage starts from the ancient Wangath Temple complex at Naranag and involves a challenging yet rewarding trek through the beautiful Himalayan landscape.

Accessing Gangabal Lake typically involves a drive from Srinagar to Naranag, followed by a 12–15km trek through pine forests, alpine meadows, and over mountain ridges. The trek is considered moderately difficult and takes about 6–8 hours one way. An alternative, longer trek originates from Sonamarg, crossing several high mountain passes and providing panoramic views of the region.

The lake is also home to many species of fish, particularly brown and rainbow trout, and is a popular spot for licensed fishing. The surrounding meadows are frequently grazed by Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherds, adding to the area’s cultural landscape.

The best time to visit Gangabal Lake is from June to September, when the snow has melted, and the trails are most accessible. During this period, the weather is relatively mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C, making it suitable for trekking and camping.
