Gobind Vallabh Pant Sagar, largest man–made lake of India
Gobind Vallabh Pant Sagar, also known as the reservoir of Rihand Dam, is the largest man-made lake in India by volume. It is located at Pipri in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, near the border with Madhya Pradesh. The dam is built on the Rihand River, a tributary of the Son River, and was constructed between 1954 and 1962. The concrete gravity dam is about 934 meters long and 91 meters high, comprising 61 independent blocks.
The reservoir holds approximately 8.6 million acre-feet of water and supports a hydroelectric powerhouse with a capacity of 300 MW. The lake plays a key role in irrigation and water supply across multiple states and has nearby super thermal power stations that impact the water's alkalinity. The construction led to the relocation of nearly 100,000 people. Despite some structural concerns, it remains an important water resource and engineering marvel in India.
