The Gol Gumbaz Archaeological Museum, located in Vijayapura (Bijapur), Karnataka, is housed in the Naqqar Khana, a double-storied rectangular building constructed in 1631 CE during the reign of Mohammed Adil Shah.
The museum was established in 1892 by the British and later taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1962. It showcases a vast collection of over 1600 artifacts, including stone inscriptions, sculptures, coins, weaponry, textiles, and Bidriware.
The museum is divided into eight galleries, with exhibits ranging from hero stones dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries to intricate Mughal and Rajput miniature paintings. Notable items include a stone representation of Rama Raya's head, an 8th-century stone Ganesha from Aihole, and a 14th-century Parswanatha sculpture.
The museum also features cannons displayed near the entrance, adding to its historical ambiance. The museum is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Fridays, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
