Govindgarh Fort
Govindgarh Fort, also known as Govindgarh Palace, is a historic royal residence located about 18 kilometers from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh. Built in 1853 by Raja Raghuraj Singh, the ruler of Rewa, it served as the summer capital of the Maharajas of the Rewa princely state.
The fort is situated on the scenic shores of a large artificial lake called Govindgarh Lake and features a compound with multiple buildings, including temples dedicated to Lord Rama and Krishna, as well as a shrine honoring Maharaja Gulab Singh. The architecture is a blend of Rajput and European styles, with notable parts such as the grand Durbar Hall and the intricately decorated Pili Kothi.
Govindgarh Palace is also historically significant as the home of Mohan, the first white tiger ever found in India. After nearly a century of royal use, the palace was vacated following India's independence and the decline of princely states. It later became a museum displaying royal artifacts like weapons, coins, manuscripts, and artwork.
Efforts began in 2018 to restore the fort and convert it into a luxury hotel, aiming to preserve its cultural heritage while offering a luxurious experience for visitors.
