Fort
Gunvantgad
Gunvantgad, also known as Morgiri Fort, is located in Patan taluka of Satara district, Maharashtra. It is a medium-sized hill fort built primarily for surveillance and monitoring the medieval trade route between Karad and Chiplun.
The fort sits near Morgiri village at the foothills and is approached via a rough path starting near Bhairavanath temple. Gunvantgad features remnants of old structures like rock-hewn wells, house foundations, and a strong northern bastion offering wide views of the Koyna riverbed and surrounding forts like Dategad.
Historically, the fort was governed by descendants of the Chalukya royal family under the Bijapur Sultanate and later came under the control of the Peshwas. It was involved in regional conflicts and eventually handed over to the British without resistance during the Maratha-British war of 1818. Due to its strategic location and architecture, the fort was primarily used for military vigilance rather than as a living palace.
