Gwalior Monument
The Gwalior Monument in Kolkata is a striking colonial-era war memorial located along Strand Road near the Hooghly River. Built in 1847 by Lord Ellenborough, the then Governor-General of India, it commemorates the British officers and soldiers who died in the Gwalior War of 1843.
The monument is also known as “Ellenborough’s Folly” or “The Pepperpot” due to its distinctive shape and architectural style. Designed by Colonel H. Goodwyn of the Bengal Engineers and constructed by Jessop and Company, the structure blends Mughal and Gothic influences, giving it a unique Indo-Saracenic appearance. Standing about 60 feet tall, the octagonal cenotaph is crowned with a bronze dome made from cannons captured from the Maratha forces.
The base is made of white marble and features a spiral staircase leading to the upper level, although entry is currently restricted. The monument’s open pavilion is supported by eight bronze pillars and adorned with floral motifs and lotus designs, reflecting Indian artistic traditions. Inside, a sarcophagus bears the names of fallen soldiers from various regiments, including artillery, cavalry, and native infantry.
