Hatgad
Hatgad Fort is a historic hill fort located approximately 71 to 86 kilometers from Nashik in Maharashtra, near the town of Saputara and close to the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. Situated at an altitude of around 3,600 feet (1,100 meters), it was constructed in the 17th century by the Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj as a strategic watchtower overlooking the surrounding valleys of Nashik and Gujarat.
The fort is part of the Sahyadri mountain range and offers panoramic views of the lush Sahyadri hills and Saputara region, making it popular with history enthusiasts, trekkers, and nature lovers. The fort has remnants of fort walls, a statue of Lord Ganesha at its summit, water reservoirs named Jamuna and Ganga, a tombstone, and old mansion ruins. It is known for its large Marathi inscriptions carved in Devanagari script and historical importance tied to Maratha and earlier rulers.
The trek to Hatgad is a moderately easy but rocky path starting near a local resort, taking about an hour to reach the top. Due to its location and natural beauty, Hatgad Fort is a favored destination for trekking and exploring Maharashtra's cultural heritage along the Gujarat border. The fort is maintained by the Maharashtra Archaeological Department and is open to the public for visits.
