Hiyangthang Lairembi Temple
Hiyangthang Lairembi Temple, located on a small hillock in Imphal West, Manipur, is an ancient and important place of worship dedicated to Goddess Hiyangthang Lairembi, also known as Irai Leima in the Meitei religion (Sanamahism). The temple is seven-storied, faces east, and features three large doors housing idols of the goddess.
It has a beautifully designed mandapa in front, offering architectural harmony atop the hill with views of the surrounding valley. The worship of the goddess dates back to the reign of King Senbi Kiyamba in the 15th century, and a grand annual feast called Chaklen Katpa is still held by a clan connected to the goddess.
During the 18th century, the goddess was identified with Hindu goddess Kamakhya (a form of Durga), and the temple celebrates the third day of Durga Puja as the "Boon Day," attracting thousands of devotees seeking blessings. The temple is a key spiritual and cultural center for the Meitei community, hosting vibrant festivals like Lai Haraoba, which reflect the rich heritage of Manipur.
