Kamalgad
Kamalgad is an ancient square hill fort located in Wai Taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra, about 16 km west of Wai and 32 km from Satara, sitting at an elevation of around 4,511 feet. The exact builder of the fort is unknown, though it is believed to have origins dating back several centuries and was used during the Maratha period to oversee and protect the surrounding areas, including the nearby Krishna River valley.
The fort is also called Bhelanja or Kattalgad — the latter meaning "death fort" — due to a deep shaft on the fort's rocky top, which is said to have been used as a prison where criminals faced harsh choices. Kamalgad saw action during the Maratha era and resisted but eventually surrendered to the British forces in April 1818. Today, it remains a popular trekking destination surrounded by dense forests and offers stunning views of the Dhoom reservoir and nearby hills.
The trek to Kamalgad is accessible and relatively moderate, inviting history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike to explore its mysterious ruins amid scenic landscapes.
