Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, also called Kankaria Zoo, is located on the outer periphery of Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Established in 1951 by Reuben David, a renowned veterinary doctor and conservationist, it originally started as Hill Garden Zoo and grew into one of Asia’s best zoos from the 1960s to 1990s.
Spread across 117 acres, the zoo houses rare mammals, birds, and reptiles, and is known for breeding endangered species to help save them from extinction. It offers education, recreation, and conservation efforts, drawing over 20 lakh visitors annually.
The zoo features various animals including tigers, lions, elephants, and exotic birds, and is praised for the personal care by devoted staff under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s guidance. It continues to be a major attraction and a vital center for wildlife preservation.
