Kandhar Fort, located in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, was originally built by Rashtrakuta King Krishna III between 939 and 967 CE. Serving as a significant military and administrative hub, the fort witnessed occupation by various dynasties including the Yadavas of Devgiri, Delhi Sultanate, Bahmani Sultanate, Nizam Shahis of Ahmadnagar, Marathas, and the British.
The fort, surrounded by a deep, water-filled moat and encircled by a 12-meter-high wall with 18 watchtowers, was strategically constructed on flat land along the Manyad River. It features notable gates such as the Jinsi and Machali Gates, as well as historical structures like the Sheesh Mahal, Ambar Khana, and ancient inscriptions including one from Muhammad bin Tughlaq.
