Kangpokpi is the administrative headquarters of Kangpokpi district in Manipur, situated at an altitude of about 992 meters and approximately 45 kilometers from the state capital, Imphal. The district was officially created in December 2016 from areas previously part of Senapati district and comprises nine sub-divisions with a population of around 1.93 lakh as per the 2011 census.
It is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including Kukis, Nagas, Nepalis, and Meiteis, each with distinct cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Kangpokpi is geographically characterized by hilly terrain surrounding the Imphal Valley, with several river valleys and reserved forest areas including the sacred Mount Koubru. The district also has an autonomous council called the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council to oversee local governance.
