Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, located in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, is a significant wetland habitat known for its rich biodiversity and migratory bird population. Covering an area of approximately 4.54 square kilometers, the sanctuary was declared a protected area in 1999 and later designated as a Ramsar site in 2024.
It is primarily an irrigation tank fed by the Pullambadi and Kattalal canals, attracting thousands of birds annually. The sanctuary is home to around 200 recorded bird species, including bar-headed geese, northern pintails, painted storks, and spot-billed pelicans.
During winter, the number of birds in the sanctuary can range between 20,000 and 60,000, making it an important feeding ground for migratory waterfowl. Apart from birds, the sanctuary also supports other wildlife such as golden jackals, Indian grey mongooses, and various fish species.
