Karera Wildlife Sanctuary
Karera Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, was established in 1981 primarily to protect the Great Indian bustard, a critically endangered bird species. Covering an area of about 202 square kilometers, the sanctuary features mixed deciduous forests, acacia trees, riverine, and swamp vegetation.
Despite its initial goal, the Great Indian bustard has not been seen there since the early 1990s, and due to local opposition and the bird's local extinction, the sanctuary is in the process of being denotified. The sanctuary still remains important for its diverse birdlife, hosting over 245 species of migratory and resident birds, along with animals like blackbuck, Indian gazelle, and other wildlife such as tigers, leopards, and elephants.
The area is known for its thorny open country landscape and the Dihaila lake, which attracts many migratory birds, making it a favored destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.
