Katepurna Wildlife Sanctuary

Katepurna Wildlife Sanctuary in Akola, Maharashtra, spans about 73.69 square kilometers and features southern tropical dry deciduous forest with over 115 plant species such as Bahada, Dhawada, Moha, Tendu, and Salai. The sanctuary is named after the Katepurna River, which flows through its center and forms the catchment for the Katepurna Reservoir, creating an important aquatic habitat attracting many water birds and migratory species during winter.

The sanctuary is known for its diverse fauna including the four-horned antelope and barking deer, along with leopards, wolves, black bucks, hyenas, wild boars, nilgai, jungle cats, hares, and monkeys. It offers a natural contrast between plateau and plains in an undulating landscape, making it picturesque for nature lovers. Bird watchers commonly spot peafowl as well as various grassland and wetland birds.

Visitors can explore the sanctuary via nature walks and jeep safaris, enjoying the serene environment and rich wildlife. The best time to visit is from October to June, with the winter months being ideal for seeing active wildlife. The sanctuary is accessible by road from Akola town, which is about 30 km away, and nearby facilities are available in Akola city as there is no accommodation inside the sanctuary itself.
