Lake
Kausar Nag
Kausar Nag is a high-altitude, sacred lake located at about 3,500 meters above sea level in the Pir Panjal mountain range of Kulgam district, Jammu and Kashmir. The lake is the source of the Veshaw River, a tributary of the Jhelum River, and is revered in Hinduism and Kashmir Shaivism for its spiritual significance. According to legend, it was created by Lord Vishnu stamping his foot, earning it the name Vishnu Pad.
Historically, it is believed that after a great flood, the boat carrying the Vedas and sages was stuck near the lake. Traditionally, two pilgrimage routes to Kausar Nag exist: one through Kulgam in the Kashmir Valley and the other via Reasi in Jammu, although the Kulgam route has seen disruptions. The lake’s serene setting amidst snow-capped peaks makes it a significant spiritual and natural landmark in the region, attracting pilgrims and nature lovers alike.
