Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary, also known as Kaluveli Bird Sanctuary, is a protected wetland area covering about 5,151.6 hectares in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu. Designated as a bird sanctuary in 2021 and recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance in 2024, it is the second largest brackish water lake in peninsular India.
The sanctuary includes Kazhuveli lake, connected to the Bay of Bengal via creeks and estuaries, where salinity varies from brackish near the sea to freshwater inland. It lies on the Central Asian Flyway, making it a vital stopover and breeding ground for over 200 bird species, including vulnerable species like the spot-billed pelican and painted stork.
