Keibul Lamjao National Park in Bishnupur, Manipur, is the world's only floating national park, covering about 40 square kilometers on Loktak Lake. The park is famous as the last natural habitat of the endangered brow-antlered deer, locally called Sangai or the dancing deer, which is also the state animal of Manipur.
The park's unique environment consists of floating mats of decomposed vegetation known as phumdis, which create a distinctive wetland ecosystem supporting diverse flora and fauna, including migratory birds and rare plants. Established as a sanctuary in 1966 and declared a national park in 1977, it plays a critical role in conservation efforts.
The park's area includes small hills that provide refuge for animals during the monsoon when water levels rise. Keibul Lamjao is also a Ramsar site, recognized for its international ecological importance. It is accessible from Imphal, about 50 kilometers away, and offers breathtaking natural beauty alongside an extraordinary glimpse into a unique ecosystem.
