Khanderi
Khanderi, also known as Kanhoji Angre Island, is a small island fort located about 5 kilometers off the coast of Maharashtra near Alibag in Raigad district. The fort was built in 1679 by the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj to control the coastal region and keep a check on the naval forces of the Siddis, who held the nearby Underi (Jaidurg) fort.
The island features two hills and had fortifications including walls, bastions, and old metal cannons. A lighthouse built by the British in 1867 stands prominently on the island, visible from 13 kilometers away. The fort area includes a temple dedicated to Sri Betal and a unique musical rock that produces metallic sounds when struck. Historically, the island played a strategic role in naval battles between the Marathas and their adversaries.
Today, Khanderi is under the jurisdiction of the Indian Navy and can be visited by tourists with permission, offering scenic views, historical relics, and a glimpse into Maratha maritime heritage.
