Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, located near Jamnagar in Gujarat, is a unique wetland ecosystem spanning about 605 hectares. It was formed by the construction of a check dam before Indian independence, which created a blend of freshwater lakes and saltwater marshlands.

This sanctuary hosts around 300 species of migratory and resident birds, including rare and endangered ones such as the Dalmatian pelican, Indian skimmer, and Pallas’s fish-eagle. The area features diverse habitats like freshwater lakes, salt marshes, mudflats, and mangroves, supporting a rich mix of flora and fauna.

Recognized as a Ramsar site on World Wetlands Day in 2022, Khijadiya plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and serves as an important stopover for migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, nature trails, and wildlife observation, especially from September to February when bird activity is at its peak.

The sanctuary also contributes to ecological balance by supporting hydrological regimes and nutrient cycling in the region. Its peaceful natural environment and biodiversity make it a prime destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
