Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary
Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, was established in 2013 to protect the unique biodiversity of this globally recognized hotspot. Covering around 700 square kilometers with elevations ranging from 1,600 to 2,400 meters, the sanctuary features a mix of dry deciduous, evergreen forests, grasslands, and shola ecosystems.
It supports a rich variety of flora, including numerous endemic and threatened plant species. The sanctuary is home to diverse fauna such as Indian bison, leopards, sloth bears, Bengal tigers, elephants, Nilgiri tahr, grizzled giant squirrels, and many bird species like the Nilgiri marten and Malabar trogon. Berijam Lake, a scenic high-altitude lake within the sanctuary, acts as a key habitat and attraction.
The region's moderate, pleasant climate and extensive forest trails make it a favored ecological and tourist destination.
