Kolaba Fort, situated in the Arabian Sea near Alibag in Raigad district, Maharashtra, is a historic maritime fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the late 17th century. Located about 1 to 2 kilometers from the Alibag shore, the fort served as a chief naval base and played a strategic role in the Maratha Empire's maritime defense.
The fort features strong basalt walls reaching an average height of 25 feet, two main entrances facing the sea and Alibag, freshwater wells within its premises, and several temples including the Siddhivinayak temple built in 1759. It also has the Haji Kamaluddin Shah Dargah and remnants of cannon artillery.
Kolaba Fort is accessible by walking during low tide or by boat during high tide and offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. Today, it is a protected monument managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and a popular tourist attraction for its historical significance and scenic location.
