Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2011, is located in the Kannur district of Kerala and covers an area of about 30.4 square kilometers. It forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and lies adjacent to other wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala and Karnataka, such as Aralam, Wayanad, and Brahmagiri, helping maintain ecological corridors for large mammals like elephants, tigers, and gaurs.
The sanctuary features diverse habitats including evergreen, semi-evergreen, deciduous forests, grasslands, and shola forests, with the Bavali River flowing through its boundary, adding to its ecological richness. It supports a rich biodiversity with over 41 species of mammals including Asian elephants, tigers, leopards, and lion-tailed macaques, along with 179 species of birds, 36 reptiles, 23 amphibians, and many butterflies and fish, making it an important conservation area in the Western Ghats.
The sanctuary is recognized for its pristine natural beauty and ecological significance but currently has no organized tourism facilities.
