Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Satara district of Maharashtra, is a vast protected area covering about 424 square kilometers in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 1985, it forms the northern part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve and is known for its rich biodiversity, including Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, Indian bison, sloth bears, sambar deer, and over 300 species of birds such as the heart-spotted woodpecker and rufous-bellied eagle.

The sanctuary features dense forests with a variety of trees and shrubs, and it's nourished by rivers like Koyna, Kandati, and Solashi, as well as Shivsagar Lake formed by the Koyna Dam. Its terrain ranges from 600 to 1,100 meters in elevation, offering a tropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall that keeps the forest lush throughout the year.

The area supports a unique ecosystem including endemic species like the frog Bufo koynayensis, making it a vital natural refuge and an attractive destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
