Krishansar Lake

Krishansar Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake situated in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, near Sonamarg, at about 3,710 meters (12,170 feet) above sea level. Known as the "lake of Krishna," it spans nearly one kilometer in length and is fed mainly by melting snow and glaciers.

The lake is oligotrophic, meaning it has clear, nutrient-poor water, and it freezes during winter, making it inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. Surrounded by lush green meadows, snow-capped mountains, and dense forests, Krishansar Lake attracts nature lovers, trekkers, anglers, and photographers. It is home to fish species like brown trout and is part of the famous Kashmir Great Lakes trekking route, which includes other scenic lakes such as Vishansar and Gadsar.

The trek to reach Krishansar starts from the village of Shitkadi near Sonamarg and covers about 35 kilometers, crossing the Nichnai Pass at 4,100 meters elevation. The best time to visit is from June to September when the weather is pleasant and the natural surroundings are vibrant. In winter, the lake freezes completely and is inaccessible due to snow. The lake’s clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, making it a breathtaking spot in the Kashmir Valley known for its serene beauty and adventurous trekking opportunities.
