It forms part of a trio of forts, including Madangad and Alang, that were built to protect the ancient commercial trade route between Nashik and Kalyan.
Dating back to the Satavahana era, the fort has seen various rulers including the Mughals, Marathas, and the British, who captured it in 1818 without destroying the fort's steps. The fort features ruins of a stone masonry wada (residence), rock-cut water cisterns, caves capable of housing many people, and fortification walls with bastions.
