According to local legend, the temple has an interesting story behind its origin. A Maharaja from Kota, Rajasthan, lost a bag of money while on a pilgrimage to Gangotri. Unable to meet the required expenses, he returned to Uttarkashi and prayed at the Vishwanath Temple, promising to marry off his daughter to any suitable boy from the village if his bag was found.
The bag was eventually found by the priest of the Vishwanath Temple, and the Maharaja kept his promise. However, the princess was unhappy as marriage would take her away from her family deity, Kuteti Devi. Both the princess and her husband prayed to the goddess, who appeared in their dreams and informed them that she would be present in their fields in the form of a stone.
They found three stones with a heavenly aroma, and the Kuteti Devi Temple was erected on the exact spot where these stones were discovered.
