The Kuthira Malika Palace, also known as the Puthen Malika Palace, is a historical gem located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Built in the 1840s by Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, this palace name translates to "Mansion of Horses" due to the 122 intricately carved wooden horses that adorn its southern roof.
The palace is a stunning example of traditional Kerala architecture, featuring sloping roofs, pillared verandahs, and enclosed courtyards. Each of its 16 main rooms has a distinctively carved ceiling made from teakwood, rosewood, marble, and granite. The unique flooring of the palace, made of egg whites, charcoal, and limestone, remains cool even in hot weather.
Inside, a portion of the palace has been converted into a museum, which houses fascinating artifacts from the Travancore royal family. Highlights include life-size Kathakali mannequins, Belgian and Italian mirrors, crystal chandeliers, traditional furniture, musical instruments, the Bohemian crystal throne, and much more.
