Lohagad Fort
Lohagad Fort, also known as the Iron Fort, is one of the many hill forts in Maharashtra, situated close to the hill station of Lonavala and about 52 kilometers northwest of Pune. Rising to an elevation of 1,033 meters above sea level, the fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It is connected to the neighboring Visapur Fort by a small range, making it an interesting trekking destination.
The history of Lohagad Fort is rich and varied, with several dynasties having occupied it over the centuries.
The initial construction is attributed to the Lohtamia dynasty during the 10th century CE. The fort was later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648 and used to store wealth. It was briefly handed over to the Mughals in 1665 but recaptured by the Marathas in 1670.
