Lower Anaicut
Lower Anaicut, also known as Anaikkarai, is a dam and bridge built on the Kollidam River in Tamil Nadu. Constructed in 1902 during the colonial era of the Madras Presidency, it was designed to facilitate irrigation in the South Arcot district.
The structure was built using stones from the ruins of Gangaikonda Cholapuram, adding to its historical significance. Situated about 70 miles downstream from the Upper Anaicut and 25 kilometers from Kumbakonam, the dam plays a crucial role in water distribution.
It features a shutter and sluice system that channels water into various waterways, including the Manniar and Uppanai rivers. Lower Anaicut also serves as the terminal barrage for the Kaveri river system, regulating water flow as per the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal.
