Mailagad Fort, also known as Mahelagad, is a historic hill fort located in the Jalgaon Jamod taluka of Buldhana district, Maharashtra, near the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border in the Satpura mountain range. It stands about 1,750 feet above sea level and is the only hill fort in Buldhana district.
The fort was likely built or rebuilt by the Nawab of Achalpur in the 18th century to protect the important route called Payanghat, connecting Barhanpur in the north to Vidarbha. Historically, Mailagad played a strategic role during the time of the Nizamshahi of Hyderabad and later under Maratha control.
The fort features several bastions, rock-cut water cisterns (though mostly dry), caves, and pillared structures. A local goddess named Mailani Devi is believed to have resided in the fort, and the fortress is also known for its scenic views of the surrounding Satpura hills. The trek to the fort involves a moderate uphill climb, and the fort remains a less frequented but culturally significant site, with ruins that reflect its historical importance.
