Originally built in 1933 as a multipurpose venue called the Irwin Amphitheatre, it was gifted to Delhi by the Maharaja of Bhavnagar and designed by Anthony S. DeMillo. It was renamed National Stadium before the 1951 Asian Games and later had Dhyan Chand's name added in 2002.
The stadium underwent a major reconstruction before the 2010 Men's Hockey World Cup, with upgrades including new synthetic pitches, floodlights, and a modern seating bowl that can accommodate about 16,200 spectators.
