Makrandgad
Makrandgad Fort, located in the Satara district of Maharashtra near Pratapgad Fort, sits at an altitude of about 4,054 feet amidst the dense Javli forest. Known also as Madhu Makarandgad, the fort features two peaks, Makrandgad and Madhugad, with a ridge running between them.
Built by King Shivaji in 1656, it served as a strategic link between Pratapgad and Vasota forts, though it was not on any major trade route. The fort is surrounded by thick forests that are home to wildlife such as wild oxen and bears. Key structures on the fort include the Mallikarjun temple and water storage tanks, while the highest points provide panoramic views of Mahabaleshwar, Pratapgad, and several other forts.
The trek to the fort is of moderate difficulty and can be approached from the villages of Hatlot or Ghonaspur, with the best time to visit being outside the rainy season. Water is available on the fort, but it’s advisable to carry potable water during the trek. The fort is appreciated by trekkers and history enthusiasts for its scenic beauty and historical significance.
