Malegaon Fort
Malegaon Fort, located about 104 km from Nashik in Maharashtra, was built in 1740 by Naro Shankar Raje Bahadur, a general of the Peshwa during the Maratha Empire. Its construction took around 25 years, with craftsmen brought from Surat and northern India, reflecting North Indian architectural influences.
The fort sits on the north bank of the Mausam River and was strategically important as a defensive land fort with strong square-shaped double ramparts, nine bastions, and a wide moat for protection. Over time, the fort served as a military stronghold, seeing battles such as the British siege in 1818, before ultimately falling to the East India Company.
Today, part of the fort is maintained as a school, and many original structures such as ramparts, bastions, gates, and old cannons remain visible, making it a significant historical site reflecting Maratha-era architecture and history in the Nashik region.
