Mandangad Fort
Mandangad Fort, also known as Chitradurga Fort, is situated about 2 km from Mandangad town in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. It is believed to have been constructed by King Bhoj in the 12th century and later came under the control of the Adilshahi ruler Jaswantrao Dalvi in 1661.
The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj without a fight when he was marching towards Dabhol, as Jaswantrao fled upon hearing of Shivaji's approach. The fort is composed of three fortifications: Mandangad proper in the south, Parkot in the middle, and Jamba in the north. It features a 400-year-old cannon, a Ganapati temple, and a large water tank called Thorla Talav.
Mandangad Fort was strategically important for protecting trade routes along the Savitri River and was later held by Kanhoji Angre before the British took control in 1818. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding region including the Savitri River, Raigad, and Varandha pass on clear days.
