Manora Fort
Manora Fort, located about 20 kilometers from Pattukkottai and 60 kilometers from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, was built by the Maratha ruler Serfoji II between 1814 and 1815 to commemorate the British victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo.
The fort is an eight-storied, hexagonal tower about 23 meters tall, overlooking the Bay of Bengal and resembling a pagoda with arched windows, a circular staircase, and eaves separating each floor. It served both as a residence for the royal family and as a lighthouse.
The structure is surrounded by walls and a moat, with rooms used for stationing troops and storage. Manora Fort suffered damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami but has been restored and remains a prominent tourist attraction recognized for its Dravidian architectural style and historical significance.
